The fatal auto-pedestrian crash that left a man dead Tuesday morning in south Laredo is connected to a reported burglary, according to the Laredo Police Department.
A burglary of a habitation was reported at about 9:55 a.m. in the 500 block of Pitaya Drive.
The homeowner reported that several men were on his property before they left in a dark-colored truck. He reportedly followed the truck.
An auto-pedestrian crash was later reported in the 2400 block of Cross Street.
The 31-year-old Hispanic man jumped from the moving truck, and the truck left before officers arrived, police said.
Medical personnel pronounced the man dead at the scene.
The preliminary investigation indicates the victim and another man at the Pitaya Drive home were immigrants who had allegedly entered the country illegally, according to police.
An autopsy will determine whether the man was struck by the truck or whether the fatal injuries were sustained in the fall, police said.
No arrests have been made, and no charges have been filed, but police believe they have located the suspect vehicle.
The investigation remains ongoing, and additional information will be released as it becomes available.
