Black Clover has enjoyed quite a strong run for over a decade, and we were all sad to see the story go when Yuki Tabata released the final chapter on May 1, 2026, in Jump GIGA's Spring release. With the series ending, we are finally seeing the successful completion of many character arcs that were set up by Tabata years ago.
At the end of Black Clover, we also saw many important positions vacated and filled with fresh faces. For example, the Golden Dawn, the most prestigious squad among the Magic Knights, needed a new leader, and this allowed for Yuno to take up the role of their leader. Prior to this in Black Clover, the strongest Magic Knight Captain was none other than Yami, the leader of the Black Bull Squad. However, at the end of the series, Yami officially retired, and the new strongest Magic Knight Captain arose in the form of Yuno, Asta's childhood rival and a Wizard on the same level as the new Wizard King himself.
Black Clover Final Chapter 391 Officially Confirms Yuno As The New Strongest Magic Knight Captain
In the world of Black Clover, the concept of magic was first introduced in the first chapter, which was released on February 16, 2015, in Issue #12 in Weekly Shonen Jump. With the existence of magic being set up, we were introduced to the Magic Knight Squads immediately after that in chapter 2, and these were groups which consist of powerful Wizards and fighters who stood as the protectors of the Clover Kingdom, under the Wizard King himself.
At the beginning of Black Clover, the Golden Dawn were the most prestigious of the Magic Knights. However, it was quickly apparent that their leader, William Vangeance, wasn't the strongest Magic Knight Captain around. The title of strongest Magic Captain actually went to Yami, the leader of the Black Bulls that Asta and Noelle would eventually join. Yami was extremely powerful with his Dark Magic, and he went on to be pivotal in many of Black Clover's arcs, including its final arc.
With Black Clover having concluded on May 1, 2026, with chapter 391, we now have a new strongest Magic Knight Captain. As Yami retired from his position, a new leader who is even stronger has now emerged. Even if he had stayed as a Knight Captain, he would have been easily surpassed by Yuno Grinberryall. At the end of Black Clover, Yuno was revealed to have become the new leader of the Golden Dawn Squad, which he was first recruited into in Chapter 3.
Yuno took up this position after being defeated by Asta and losing his shot at obtaining the position of Wizard King. Despite Yuno's loss, however, he is undoubtedly a Wizard on the same level as Asta. In the Clover Kingdom, he is only second to the latter, making him the second strongest character overall and, by far, the strongest Magic Knight Captain to have ever lived. With Yuno now at the helm of the Golden Dawn Squad, the Magic Knight squad will undoubtedly reach new heights as he outdoes his predecessor, William.
Yuno’s Magical Prowess With Wind And Star Magic Surpasses Even Yami’s Dark Magic
Yami was introduced as the Magic Knight Captain of the Black Clover Chapter 2. Yami's intimidating nature quickly devolved as we saw him to be a caring leader who pushed his Knights forward. He was also a great help in building up Asta and Noelle to what they are today, and his power in battle was indispensable oftentimes. In terms of power, Yami makes use of Dark Magic, which is one of the most overpowered types of magic in Black Clover, able to cut through space itself and manipulate darkness at will. This power is what made him the strongest Magic Captain Knight around for years. However, when it comes to magic, no character comes close to Yuno at the end of the story.

Yuno started his journey with Wind magic, which would only be upgraded when he acquired the Four Leaf Lucky Clover Grimoire, which upgraded his powers. His Wind Magic would go on to further develop when he acquired the Wind Spirit Sylph in Chapter 19 of Black Clover, which was released on June 29, 2015, in Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump Issue #31. It was later revealed in Black Clover that Yuno was also royalty from the Spade Kingdom, and he went on to acquire Star magic. He is even able to combine the two with his dual affinity.
Yuno's true power came through in his duo battle with Asta against Lucius. While Asta was able to nullify and counter Lucius's ability, Yuno was essential in the battle as a firing force. Furthermore, we know he's quite skilled in magic, as confirmed by the Black Clover data book Marque-page de Grimoire, which was released on May 2, 2018. In this data book, it was revealed that Yami scored 4 in magic control, 4 in mana sensing, 3 in magical powers, and 5 in mana pool. Yami undoubtedly surpasses Yuno in physical attributes, but the latter still trumps him with raw magic abilities. In the databook, Yuno was revealed to have scored 4 in magic control, and 5 in mana sensing, magical powers, and mana pool.
Yuno’s Role In The Future of Black Clover As The Strongest Magic Knight
Black Clover ended on May 1, 2026, with the release of the final batch of chapters spanning from chapter 389 to 392. These chapters were all released in Jump GIGA's Spring Edition of 2026. In these chapters, we saw the post-Lucius battle events unfold, which included Yuno’s battle against Asta for the title of Wizard King. The former eventually lost this battle and instead took up the role of Golden Dawn Squad Leader. While the story might seem over and Yuno’s character arc having concluded, there is still one chapter to look forward to, which is set to be released on August 3, 2026, in the new databook, alongside Black Clover Volume 38. In this new chapter, we could see more of Yuno as the new strongest Magic Knight Captain, and we could also see more of his relationship with the other characters flourish in the epilogue of the story.
We're also excited for the databook, and it will surely give new updated stats for Yuno and other characters. At the end of the story, we definitely expect Yuno to have maxed out his magic powers, cementing himself even further as the strongest Magic Knight Captain above even the likes of Yami, William, and Dorothy.
