Black Clover has become one of the most popular magical action series to ever serialize in Weekly Shonen Jump and Jump GIGA. The story by Yuki Tabata has garnered a lot of attention and praise over the years, not only because of its lovable cast of characters but also because of its power system, which revolves around magic.
In Black Clover, almost everyone is born with mana, allowing them to utilize magic. At 15, they even get a grimoire, which ups their abilities and grants them new spells. The strongest grimoire of all, however, has nothing to do with mana and instead allows its user to tap into anti-magic, an ability that can cancel all magic. This grimoire is the Five-leaf Grimoire that was acquired by Asta and has proven to be, by the end of the story, the best one around, even surpassing the likes of Lucius' Double-spade Grimoire or Yuno’s Four-Leaf one.
Black Clover’s Strongest Grimoire At The End of The Story Is Asta’s 5 Leaf Grimoire
Black Clover is a series that was written in 2015 by Yuki Tabata and debuted in WSJ Issue #12 on February 16, 2015. Immediately upon its debut, Magic was shown to be its basis, and right after, Grimoires were also revealed in the same Chapter 1. It was also confirmed by Tabata in this chapter that, at the age of 15, teenagers in the Clover Kingdom participate in a ceremony which decides what Grimoire they get.
Grimoires typically come in Three Leaf Clovers, each of the leaves representing faith, hope, and love. While Yuno acquired the lucky four-leaf grimoire, Asta received an anomaly known as the Five-leaf Grimoire, and it was stated by the author that the Devil itself resided in it in Black Clover Chapter 1. At first, this made Asta a joke among his peers, but quickly it became apparent that this Five-leaf Grimoire is the best one around, with the strongest ability of all: Anti-Magic.

Asta’s grimoire turned out to literally have a devil inside of it. This grimoire was originally a four-leaf grimoire owned by elf Licht, but eventually it was corrupted by Zagred, turning it into a 5 Leaf Clover. However, its true power came to awaken when the Grimoire was possessed by a low-ranking Demon with no mana: Liebe. Liebe was mocked for being born without mana, but his hatred devolved into the anti-magic ability that we know today. Liebe came to possess the Grimoire after Asta’s mother, Richita, sealed him there to protect him from Lucifuro in Black Clover chapter 268.
Technically, while other Grimoire holders had powers before even acquiring their Grimoire, like Yuno with his Wind magic, anti-magic itself can only be used when having possession of this Grimoire. What's more, this Grimoire can only be used by someone with no mana, like Asta, making the possibility of wielding it quite low. The powers granted by this Grimoire were especially highlighted during the final battle of the series, which saw Asta and Yuno face off against Lucius. They were also highlighted in the epilogue of the story, where we saw Asta finally defeat Yuno in a one-on-one battle and become the Wizard King of the Clover Kingdom. This marked him as the strongest mage in the series, something he couldn't have achieved with simple brute force without his Grimoire.
How Asta’s 5 Leaf Grimoire Made Him The Wizard King
Asta’s powers with the 5 Leaf Clover Grimoire are definitely special, but he is also the perfect person to wield it. While almost everyone in Black Clover is born with some mana as their energy force, Asta and Liebe were born with none. Liebe was simply born that way, while Asta’s mana was stripped away by his own mother due to the odd condition that caused her to absorb life force.
Anti-magic is as powerful as it is due to its nature, which counters all mana that every other character possesses. Asta, when wielding an anti-magic weapon, can cut through any mana-based ability. That means even overpowered and broken abilities such as Lucius’s time or soul magic, or Yuno’s wind and star magic can be countered and nullified. Coupled with Asta's ferocious physical strength from years of training, he is quite a hard character to bring down with magic or physical-based powers.
With Anti-Magic in his possession, Asta was able to stir the battle forward against Lucius in the manga. Even with Yuno's undeniable magical talent, the fight would have ended very quickly without Anti-Magic. Yuno, by himself, couldn’t have countered Lucius. In that sense, even the lucky Four Leaf Grimoire was outdone. Asta, with the power of his Grimoire, was allowed to tap into his ultimate ability, Devil Union, and push past all obstacles. Devil Union is a transformation that sees him combine with Liebe and coat himself in anti-magic, making for an even more ferocious form that's harder to take down with magic. Asta made use of his Anti-Magic for the last time in the manga versus Yuno, in chapter 392, which was released officially on May 1, 2026, in the deciding battle that crowned him the Wizard King, with his final move being ‘Demon Slayer.’
New Black Clover’s Release On August 4 Could Expand Upon Asta’s New 5 Leaf Clover Grimoire Powers
Black Clover ended in Jump GIGA’s Spring Edition, with its final batch of three chapters, ending with Chapter 392 on May 1. In the final chapter, we saw some character arc conclusions, such as Asta becoming Wizard King, or Noelle reconnecting with her siblings. We also saw some couples form, such as Yami and Charlotte, among others. While that might seem like the end of the Black Clover series as a whole, we still have one final chapter coming on August 4, 2026. This chapter is going to be released in the newest fan book for Black Clover, and side by side with Volume 38, the final release of the franchise.
In this new chapter, we could see the 5 Clover Grimoire being brought back one more time. After all, Asta is now the Wizard King, and he has maintained this high position through his unbeatable Anti Magic that counters all else. Furthermore, in the new data book, we might get new information on Anti Magic or on Asta's grimoire, and new abilities. We're also expecting new stats to be revealed for each character, and we can't wait to see how Asta fares as the new Wizard King.
Yuki Tabata could also give us the setup of a new user of the Five Leaf Grimoire, which would be a bold yet exciting move. Finally, fans want the author to set up the final romance of Asta with either Noelle or Mimosa, and finally show if, in the future, Asta has any children. In this case, there would definitely be a chance of at least one of them being born without mana and being capable of wielding the strongest Grimoire once more.
