The Indiana Fever blew out the Connecticut Sun 123-88 in their final game before the WNBA All-Star break. Caitlin Clark led the way for Indiana with a huge double-double of 27 points and 11 assists.
Kelsey Mitchell added 23 points on 9-of-16 shooting, while Aliyah Boston tallied 22 points, six rebounds, five assists and three steals.
While the Fever easily handled the Sun, it wasn't necessarily an uneventful showdown. In fact, it was a highly physical one filled with flagrant and technical fouls.
As early as the first quarter, Sun rookie Nell Angloma committed a Flagrant 1 foul on Kelsey Mitchell, which put her in line for a $500 fine.
Midway through the third quarter, the physicality continued, with Connecticut forward Diamond Miller receiving a technical foul. It came after she kept pestering Clark, holding and pulling her on defense. She also seemingly tried to instigate Clark by getting physical and attempting to steal the ball during a dead-ball situation.
It was Miller's fourth technical foul of the season. That means she's due to pay a bigger fine to the WNBA.
The WNBA's rules state that a player's first three technical fouls each carry a $500 fine. while the fourth through seventh techs are punishable by $1,000 each. When a player reaches eight technical fouls, they will receive a $1,500 fine and be suspended for one game.
Every other technical foul after the eighth (meaning the 10th, 12th, 14th techs and so on) also carries a one-game suspension in addition to the fine.
For what it's worth, later in the third quarter, Clark and Saniya Rivers received double technical fouls. It was the All-Star guard's seventh of the season, which means she's just one tech away from suspension.
