Sophie Cunningham's pointing gesture has become iconic, and Brittney Griner tried it ahead of the Indiana Fever-Connecticut Sun game on Wednesday. The former teammates shared a lighthearted pregame moment that was captured on camera.
Cunningham started off her viral finger point on June 22 against the Phoenix Mercury. It happened following a heated exchange with DeWanna Bonner while talking to referees.
The gesture has since turned into a viral internet meme. She stood her ground and pointed silently at the Mercury star for around 22 seconds without saying a word. It has since been recreated by public figures, athletes and fans, and continues to be a popular topic among WNBA circles.
Cunningham and Griner were teammates with the Mercury for six seasons before joining their current teams. The 10-time All-Star center signed with the Atlanta Dream in January 2025 before taking her talents to Connecticut in April. Cunningham, on the other hand, was traded to Indiana last year and re-signed with the franchise in the offseason.
The Fever and Sun are meeting for the second time this season, with Cunningham and Co. winning 85-75 on June 13. Indiana is 16-10 for the season and has won four of its last five games. The team is also looking to extend its winning streak to three games on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, Griner and her team sit 14th in the standings with a 7-19 record. They are coming off a loss to Phoenix on Sunday but have set their sights on getting back on track. Connecticut previously won back-to-back matchups and appeared ready to turn its fortunes around.
