Veronica Ferres (61) is returning to material with German roots. The actress is part of the cast of a new Christmas special of the British BBC comedy "The Cleaner", as announced by the broadcaster. Filming began this week, and the one-hour episode is scheduled to air during the holidays on BBC One and on the iPlayer streaming service.
The focus is once again on Greg Davies (58) as state-certified crime scene cleaner Paul "Wicky" Wickstead, whose job is to clean up the aftermath of crimes. Davies wrote the script and also takes on the lead role.
A hiking vacation goes off the rails
This time, the plot takes Wicky to the Italian Dolomites. Reluctantly, he accompanies his girlfriend Ruth (Zita Sattar) and her acquaintances on a hiking vacation. When an accident occurs, he must spend the rest of the trip in a remote mountain hotel while Ruth heads out into nature.
Between an eccentric hotel manager (Peter Serafinowicz) and a series of odd guests, Wicky grows increasingly suspicious, especially as the staff behaves more and more suspiciously.
What role does Veronica Ferres play?
The broadcaster did not reveal which role the German actress takes on in the special. Joining her in the ensemble are Robert Webb, Kevin Eldon, Tori Allen-Martin, Milanka Brooks, and Dylan Blore, among others.
The British series is based on the award-winning comedy series "Der Tatortreiniger" (NDR, 2011-2018), which screenwriter Ingrid Lausund, alias Mizzi Meyer, created and turned into a cult format in Germany together with director Arne Feldhusen and lead actor Bjarne Mädel (58).
Hit format with millions of viewers
The success of the original continued across the Channel. According to the BBC, the first season of "The Cleaner" reached 5.4 million viewers, making it the second most successful new BBC comedy of 2021. All three seasons to date have been among the five most-watched fictional comedy series in the British market in their respective years.
Greg Davies is full of anticipation. Wicky has reached a point in life where he only likes three things: his job, the pub, and beer, the broadcaster quotes the actor as saying. Forcing him to go on a hiking vacation to Italy is the perfect opportunity to test his limits. He can hardly wait to show the audience just how terribly a vacation can go wrong.
Veronica Ferres is in demand internationally
For Veronica Ferres, this is not her first international format. For about ten years, she has repeatedly been part of foreign film productions. Her recent filmography includes "The Unholy Trinity" (2024) with Pierce Brosnan and Samuel L. Jackson, and "The Bricklayer - Tödliche Geheimnisse" with Aaron Eckhart and Nina Dobrev. For "The Weight - (Im) Goldrausch" (2026) with Ethan Hawke and Russell Crowe, she is listed as co-producer.
