The epic sci-fi storytelling of Dune and the mystical, creation-heavy themes of Lord of the Rings come together in Ridley Scott's two-season science fiction drama series. Any fantasy show will be influenced by The Lord of the Rings, and by the same token, though to a lesser degree, any science fiction show will be influenced by Frank Herbert's Dune. Even a legendary director like Ridley Scott has his influences, and his HBO series, no doubt, can be traced to those tomes.
Raised by Wolves is a two-season sci-fi drama series created by Aaron Guzikowski and executive produced by Scott, who also directed the first two episodes of the show. The series is set sometime in the 22nd century, where Earth has been devastated by war between religious adherents and atheists.
Two androids, dubbed Mother (Amanda Collin) and Father (Abubakar Salim), are sent to another planet and tasked with raising human children in order to bring the species back from extinction. However, the problems of humanity regrow, even in a new, "pure" population, and Mother and Father realize their jobs will be more difficult than previously thought.
As the survivors of the project grow, other colonies of survivors make their presence known, and the issues that signaled the beginning of the end for Earth once again raise their heads. It's a highly philosophical, sometimes confusing, always intriguing sci-fi series that's surprisingly difficult to watch only a few years after it ended.
Raised By Wolves Is One Of The Best Modern Sci-Fi Shows
Raised by Wolves is one of the best science fiction shows of the last 10 years, and that's saying a lot with the strong slate we've benefited from since 2016. It's a highly imaginative series, with visuals and production decisions that make the alien worlds truly extraterrestrial.
Ideas about artificial intelligence feel like premonitions when you look at what we're dealing with now, and Raised by Wolves dives headfirst into sticky religious debates. Other science fiction shows only poke at such problems, often vaguely referencing religion so as not to cause too much discomfort.
Raised by Wolves likes to cause discomfort, which might be why it was canceled after two seasons, but that bloody, honest discomfort sets it apart from other science fiction series. There's a sterile coldness to the show that is paradoxically warm in how real and true to our own history it feels.
Raised By Wolves Is No Longer Available On HBO Max
Raised by Wolves was canceled after just two seasons. For a time, it was unclear as why the show was taken off the production schedule, but recently, David Zucker, a producer for Raised by Wolves, revealed that the merger of WarnerMedia and Discovery, Inc. caused enough turmoil that the show was shelved.
More strangely, however, is that Raised by Wolves is no longer available on HBO Max. In fact, it's not available to stream anywhere and if you want to watch it, you'll have to purchase it on Amazon Prime. As frustrating as it is to find Raised by Wolves, its difficulty in being viewed does lend it a mystique worthy of its strange story.
