The film about rap legend Snoop Dogg (54) now has a release date. US trade magazine "Variety" reports that "Snoop" is set to hit theaters in August 2027. The focus is on the life of the US artist, who is considered one of the most influential figures in US rap history. The lead role will be played by Jonathan Daviss (26), who is best known to a wide audience from the series "Outer Banks".
The studio describes the project as "the definitive film biography of the artist, mogul and gangsta rap icon". Official details about the plot have not been released. It's also still unclear what narrative approach the biopic will take.
This leaves open whether the film will trace Snoop's career in its entire breadth - comparable to films like "Bohemian Rhapsody" - or focus on a specific formative phase of his life, similar to "Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere".
Craig Brewer takes the director's chair
The film will be directed by Craig Brewer (54), who is known for his musical films "Hustle & Flow" and "Song Sung Blue", among others. In addition to the life story, Snoop Dogg's music is also expected to play a central role in the film. His best-known hits include "Drop it Like It's Hot" and "Gin and Juice".
The rapper already spoke about the project in April at CinemaCon. "After my brothers got to tell their story in 'Straight Outta Compton,' now it's my turn", he said.
He also praised director Craig Brewer and recalled his previous work: "My director Craig Brewer showed us in 'Hustle & Flow' how hard it is out here. And then last year in 'Song Sung Blue' he got us all singing 'Sweet Caroline'", "Billboard" quotes him.
