When you have a dog, every day is a gift—but also a surprise! Leaving them alone for any length of time means trusting they'll hang low and stay out of trouble. Sometimes that's not how it plays out, which is exactly what happened recently with a Golden Retriever named Boone, who may or may not have tested house rules for a little solo fun!
It's a good thing Boone is so darn cute (look at that gigantic, toothy grin!), because it seems as though this funny pup found the garbage can during his time left alone. He may not realize Mom's onto him with his obvious tells that include the "nonchalant yawn, guilty smile, heavy blinking, and excessive tail wagging" to get him out of any potential trouble.
Capturing the curious Golden Retriever in the act (or right after) is a true talent, and Mom (via @bluebonnieandboone) got all of Boone's good sides. To be fair, there's no concrete proof he's guilty of any wrongdoing.
All the evidence points to a setup, and sweet Boone had no issue being the fall guy—probably because there's no way a pup with a face like that could be scolded for a little innocent dumpster diving!
Some of this may be attributed to Boone being the baby of the family. He's a curious boy who loves exploring and adventuring, whether it's with his doggy family, his humans, or alone. He really is adorable (and totally innocent of all crimes)!
When Boone isn't (allegedly) cleaning out the trash can, he's busy living his best life, taking up the whole bed whenever he needs to rest his bones. Again, he's so cute, who cares?
Why Dogs Find Trouble When Left Alone
Dogs are natural scavengers, and in some cases (search and rescue, therapy pups, etc.), it makes sense! But as any pet parent knows, it's a whole other story when their instincts get the best of them.
Dogs like Boone might seek out things they shouldn't due to boredom, pent-up energy, or separation anxiety. As social creatures who prefer their pack over solo time, dogs might dig, chew, shred, or get into things they shouldn't to self-soothe. But don't worry—for most situations, there's an easy fix.
Before leaving your pup alone, make sure they've gotten adequate exercise, have dog-appropriate chews and things to self-soothe, and it's never a bad idea to remind them of basic commands and rules. As for Boone, the jury's still out as to whether he was actually at fault for the trash incident, but my vote is not guilty!
