Weston Kennedy wants the best for his Bernedoodle, Margo, because the dog has only brought good things to his life.
The 20-year-old welcomed the year-old dog into his life in September and “fell in love with her,” Kennedy tells PEOPLE.
“She has that doodle energy, but that’s part of the fun. She’s truly been great to work with. She’s really smart,” he adds. “She has been one of the happiest dogs I’ve ever been around.”
To make sure he kept her spirits up, Kennedy sought out ways to make Margo’s life better. For example, when Kennedy brought the pup home, he was living in Petal, Mississippi, at a property that was “very open and with no fenced-in backyard.” To ensure that his Bernedoodle could explore the place safely, Kennedy purchased a Halo Collar 5, which is an advanced GPS smart collar that combines a wireless GPS fence, real-time GPS tracking, and activity monitoring.
With the Halo Collar 5, Kennedy could set up a virtual fence that the collar responds to, setting boundaries for Margo on the property that allowed her to have room to roam while staying safe.
“Anytime I would be in the house, I would feel so bad just making her stay on the porch. Halo gives her more freedom in the backyard, and it truly was one of the best tools for living in that area,” the dog owner notes.
Kennedy got to see just how valuable the smart collar was for his dog during a recent “scary moment.”
“I had just let Margot out with her Halo Collar on, and went inside, and went about my business for about five minutes. And then I heard Margot yelping,” Kennedy recalls, adding that he also received a notification on his Halo app that Margo had left her designated virtual fence area.
“I ran outside and realized she was on the other side of the road. I saw a car passing by, and I saw other dogs leaving the area, but I wasn’t really sure what could have happened,” he adds.
Unsure if Margo was injured or in need of help, Kennedy called out to his dog, but the canine seemed too overwhelmed to lock in on his voice. Luckily, Kennedy had trained Margo on the Halo Collar 5’s recall feature. The recall feature allows the dog owner to play a unique whistle sound on the smart collar so the canine user knows to head back home.
“She was frantic. So I used the Halo Collar recall feature, and she knew to come to the back door, even though she wasn’t really listening to anything I was saying,” the pet parent explains.
Once Kennedy had Margo back in the house, he took her to an emergency vet for an exam. The veterinarian determined the dog had not been hit by a car, as Kennedy feared, but had been attacked by other canines that had wandered into Margo’s area. Thankfully, the injuries from that encounter weren’t serious.

Kennedy says his dog didn’t let the incident affect her positive spirit, and they are both grateful the pet’s smart collar helped prevent the event from escalating to something serious.
He hopes Margo’s close call inspires other dog owners to trust their instincts when they think something is wrong with their pet, and to invest in a way to protect their dog while still providing them freedom.
