Many Philadelphia Phillies fans are still recovering from last year’s brutal season-ending loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers, which saw the visiting squad make a big blunder in Game 4 of the National League Division Series. Well, people better make some room for more LA-induced agony, or perhaps the more appropriate term is self-inflicted agony.
Threatening the two-time World Series champions in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Fightin’ Phils blew a prime opportunity to either send the action into extra innings or win it in walk-off fashion. With one out and rookie Justin Crawford at third base and veteran catcher J.T. Realmuto on second, All-Star outfielder Brandon Marsh hit a ground ball to the hot corner. A blooper reel then took center stage inside Citizens Bank Park, as Crawford got himself caught in a rundown and Realmuto was thrown out at second in a game-ending double play.
The home crowd needed a minute to process the chaos, but the result was an indisputable 2-1 loss, which happens to be the same score as the aforementioned Game 4 debacle from last October.

Whether it is a botched play by relief pitcher Orion Kerkering during the playoffs, or Realmuto’s inexplicable decision to return to second after Crawford got himself in a base-running jam on Tuesday night, the Phillies cannot seem to avoid catastrophe when they face the Dodgers. A regular season loss rarely hurts as much as this one will for Philadelphia.
Despite out-hitting Los Angeles and getting seven strong innings form Zack Wheeler, the Phillies (56-46) pick up their third loss in five games. They can alleviate some of fans’ bitter disappointment by grabbing Wednesday night’s rubber match in Chavez Ravine.
But first, the team must figure out how to get through what is likely a restless night of sleep.
