Going into the series opener against the St. Louis Cardinals on Monday, the Los Angeles Angels were in the middle of a 106-game losing streak when they entered the ninth inning trailing.
On Monday, the Angels went into the bottom of the ninth inning trailing the Cardinals 2-1.
With one out on the board, second baseman Vaughn Grissom hit a game-tying double to make the score 2-2. Then, St. Louis right-hander Riley O’Brien hit right fielder Jo Adell with a pitch, allowing the Angels to secure the 3-2 walk-off victory.
The win ended that brutal 106-game winning streak, which was the longest active streak in MLB.
Angels Still Have a Long Way to Go
Breaking the 106-game losing streak will certainly give the Halos a boost of confidence for the second half of the season.
But Los Angeles still has a lot of work to do to finish out the 2026 season on a high note.
The Angels have the worst record (40-61) in the American League and the second-worst behind the Colorado Rockies (40-62) in MLB. Monday’s win started a two-game winning streak for the Angels, which is the first for the team since defeating the Athletics in back-to-back games on June 27 and 28.
At this point in the season, the Angels’ odds of making the playoffs are nearly zero. But the organization showed it is trying to take the steps towards building a winning franchise when it fired general manager Perry Minasian on June 26.
The Angels brought in former Cardinals executive John Mozeliak to serve as their interim general manager.
Mozeliak is assisting the Angels with their search for a new long-term general manager. The hope is that the next general manager will be able to help the Halos find a way back to the postseason for the first time since 2014.
