Athletics infielder Joshua Kuroda-Grauer suffered an injury on Monday night so serious that he needed emergency surgery.
But first, he had an at-bat to finish.

Kuroda-Grauer ― who hit his first Major League home run in the second inning of the game against the Arizona Diamondbacks ― fouled a ball off his... well... balls in the fifth.
He went down in agony. He didn’t know it yet, but he had suffered a ruptured testicle.
Kuroda-Grauer was checked out on the field, remained in the game and got a base hit three pitches later.
He also went out to play third base in the bottom of the inning, but something was clearly wrong.
He was pulled from the game in the sixth and sent off to get checked out at a Phoenix hospital, where he was diagnosed with the injury and sent to emergency surgery.

A’s manager Mark Kotsay told MLB.com that his player was in “great spirits” and even “joking” about the injury.
“His personality is amazing,” he said. “He’s such a great kid. Unfortunate to have to lose him with the way he was performing and just the way he was integrated into this group. He fit right in.”

Kuroda-Grauer was placed on the injured list.
It’s not yet clear when he’ll able to play again ― but over his first 16 games, he had been batting an impressive .417.
