Matt Damon Made One Exception for Christopher Nolan

Damon has shared that his planned hiatus came with a single exception. If Nolan offered him a role, the break would immediately come to an end. That scenario became reality when the filmmaker approached him to play General Leslie Groves, the military officer who directed the Manhattan Project and worked alongside J. Robert Oppenheimer during the development of the atomic bomb.

Released on July 21, 2023, “Oppenheimer” chronicles the life of physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, from his scientific career to his leadership of the Los Alamos Laboratory and the political scrutiny he later faced. Written and directed by Nolan, the historical drama stars Cillian Murphy in the title role, with Damon joining an ensemble cast that also includes Emily Blunt, Robert Downey Jr., Florence Pugh, Josh Hartnett, Casey Affleck, Rami Malek, and Kenneth Branagh.

The film became both a critical and commercial success, earning more than $976 million worldwide while helping spark the “Barbenheimer” phenomenon alongside “Barbie.” At the 96th Academy Awards, it received 13 nominations and won seven Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Director for Nolan, Best Actor for Murphy, and Best Supporting Actor for Downey Jr.

Damon and Nolan have since reunited for “The Odyssey,” the filmmaker’s 2026 adaptation of Homer’s epic poem. This time, Damon takes center stage as Odysseus, marking another collaboration between the actor and the director after the partnership that first interrupted his planned acting break with “Oppenheimer.”
