Netflix's R-Rated Action Thriller Is Officially One of the Year's Biggest Hits

Netflix has officially crowned a new action thriller hit as one of the biggest streaming releases of 2026.

Netflix has released some massive projects this year, including one big enough to crack the streamer’s all-time top 10 in War Machine. The Alan Ritchson-starring sci-fi thriller picked up over 140 million views during its first two months on the platform, and the streamer has since confirmed that a sequel to the film, tentatively titled War Machines, is now in the works. Netflix's latest TV hit is I Will Find You, the new kidnapping thriller series based on the novel of the same name by Harlan Coben. The show debuted just over a month ago, on June 18, and it’s officially made Netflix history as one of the few projects ever to spend one full month in the top spot. There have been a few other big releases hit streaming on Netflix this year, including one epic survival thriller that’s overstaying its welcome.

Back on April 24, Netflix dropped one of its most anticipated movies of the year, Apex, starring Charlize Theron and Taron Egerton. Theron also recently starred in Christopher Nolan’s new historical epic, The Odyssey, as Calypso. After dominating streaming for the better part of two months, things have since slowed down for Apex a bit in the last few weeks, but the show did more than enough damage to leave its mark. Netflix released an official list of its most-watched projects of 2026 between January and June, and landing at #5 on the list is Apex, which earned 129 million views. This is more than double that of one of the most anticipated movies of the year, Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man, which scored 64 million views during the first few months of the year.

What Is ‘Apex’ About?

Apex follows Sasha (played by Charlize Theron), a woman who finds herself in the Australian wilderness after a tragic climbing incident befalls her lover, Tommy (played by Eric Bana). Early on her travels, Sasha meets Ben (played by Taron Egerton), who poses as a friendly guide to help her navigate this dangerous terrain. However, it quickly turns into a deadly game of cat and mouse, where only one person can escape with their life. Jeremy Robbins wrote the script for Apex and Baltasar Kormákur directed the film, which earned scores of 68% from critics and 46% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes.
