Billy Bob Thornton has long been one of the biggest stars in the world, but in the last few years, he’s exploded to new levels of stardom thanks to his role in Landman. The Taylor Sheridan-written and produced series has aired two full seasons in only two years, but after filming on Season 3 was pushed back to August, it has since been confirmed that it will not premiere until sometime in 2027. Thornton may be known around town these days as Tommy Norris from Landman, but he’s also an Oscar-winner for his work as a writer on Sling Blade, the 1996 drama that also earned him an acting nod. Thornton also recently had a key role in The Gray Man (co-starring Chris Evans and Ryan Gosling), which is one of the top 10 most-watched Netflix movies of all time.
One of Thornton’s roles that flew under the radar at the time, but has aged gracefully, came from playing Billy McBride in all four seasons of Goliath, which is streaming on Prime Video. The legal thriller show is perfect for fans of Bosch and The Lincoln Lawyer, and while it leans more into the nuances of the latter, it still has crime procedural elements quite similar to Bosch. The flagship Bosch shows starring Titus Welliver have come to an end, and Netflix has announced that there will only be one more season of The Lincoln Lawyer, which has given fans a newfound desire to find new replacement shows like Goliath. This has led the series back into the Prime Video top 10 in a handful of countries around the world, while some discover the show for the first time and others revisit it for the first time in years.
What Is ‘Goliath’ About?
The official synopsis for Goliath reads as follows: “Once a titan of the courtroom, Billy McBride (Billy Bob Thornton) now drowns his demons in a bottle. But when a wrongful death case pulls him back into the arena, Billy squares off against the very firm he built from the ground up. As buried secrets surface, the fight becomes a high-stakes battle for redemption against a seemingly unbeatable opponent.” Goliath earned scores of 86% from critics and 70% from audiences on the aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes. The show was written and created for TV by David E. Kelley, who also worked as a scribe on The Lincoln Lawyer and Presumed Innocent.
