Tom Cruise is giving NASCAR fans what they want: a "Days of Thunder" sequel.

A little over a year ago, Cruise teased that a "Days of Thunder" sequel could eventually be in the works once he's done filming "Digger." He made this announcement before the premiere of "Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning."

“It took me 35 years to figure out Top Gun: Maverick, so all of these things we’re working on, we’re discussing [sequels to] Days of Thunder and Top Gun: Maverick. There’s numerous other films that we’re actively working on right now,” Cruise said. “I’m always shooting a film, prepping a film, posting a film. I just finished a film with Alejandro Iñárritu too, who did The Revenant, that was an extraordinary experience.”

Well, The Hollywood Reporter announced Wednesday that a "Days of Thunder" sequel is officially happening.

Jonathan Levine is set to direct this blockbuster film, with Cruise reprising his role as NASCAR driver Cole Trickle.

As you'd imagine, NASCAR fans are thrilled about this report. They've been itching to see Cruise back on the track since "Days of Thunder" hit theaters in 1990.

"I genuinely can not believe this is actually in the works," one fan said in response to this news. "Hopefully it’s as well executed as the F1 movie."

"I can't believe that it is actually moving forward," a second fan wrote. "I think its big for NASCAR, Tom Cruise is not going to make it as a joke like the Talladega Nights movie."

"Oh my god it's happening," another fan commented.

What do we know about this sequel?

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the only people attached to this project right now are Cruise and Levine. It's unclear if Nicole Kidman and Cary Elwes will return.

There were some rumblings about Paramount Studios merging "F1" and "Days of Thunder" so fans could watch Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt clash on the big screen. That rumor was even brought to their attention last summer.

“Well, I’m not gonna hang my [expletive] off airplanes and [expletive] like that,” Pitt told E! News. “So when he does something again that’s on the ground."

Who knows? Maybe we'll see Pitt in the "Days of Thunder" sequel.
