DeWanna Bonner gave respect to Brittney Griner after breaking one of the latter’s records in the Phoenix Mercury’s 72-63 win over the Connecticut Sun on Sunday night.
Bonner is going through the 18th year of her WNBA career, her 12th with the Mercury. She played alongside Griner as teammates during the 2010s, winning a title together in 2014.
Bonner is back with Phoenix after reuniting with the team in 2025, while Griner departed in 2024. The latter spent one year with the Atlanta Dream before joining the Sun.

Griner left Phoenix with multiple records to her name, especially in the rebounding department. She held the all-time record until Bonner surpassed her in this latest contest. Bonner made sure to pay respect to Griner after seeing she made history, per reporter Shane Young.
“Really cool moment for DB, who looks across the court and gives a nice heart sign to Brittney Griner after passing her on the Mercury’s all-time rebounding list,” Young wrote.
How DeWanna Bonner, Mercury played against Sun
It was certainly an honorable moment for DeWanna Bonner to show for Brittney Griner. The former played well throughout Phoenix’s victory over Connecticut.
Three players scored in double-digits for Phoenix in the win, including Bonner. She delivered a stat line of 21 points, six rebounds and a steal. She shot 7-of-13 from the field, including 1-of-3 from beyond the arc, and 6-of-8 from the free-throw line. Kahleah Copper came next with 18 points and four assists, Monique Akoa Makani had 11 points and six rebounds, while Alyssa Thomas provided seven points and 11 assists.
Phoenix improved to a 9-18 record on the season, being second-to-last in the Western Conference standings. They are above the Seattle Storm while trailing the Los Angeles Sparks and the Portland Fire.
The Mercury will look forward to their next matchup, being on the road. They gear up for a clash with the Sparks as tip-off takes place on July 22 at 3 p.m. ET.
