Caitlin Clark was cleared to play on the second night of the Indiana Fever’s back-to-back after putting together one of the greatest performances of her young WNBA career just 24 hours earlier.
The Fever guard, who had been listed as probable because of the back injury the team has carefully managed throughout the season, was ultimately given the green light to face the New York Liberty after erupting for a historic 45 points and 10 assists in Friday night’s thrilling victory over the Seattle Storm.
Clark’s availability came as a pleasant surprise after Indiana previously held her out of the second game of a back-to-back earlier this month. With the Fever looking to extend their winning streak, the organization decided to keep its franchise star on the floor despite the demanding schedule.
However, Saturday’s contest took an emotional turn early in the opening quarter.
After a Liberty inbound play, New York center Jonquel Jones appeared to set a screen on Clark that freed Marine Johannès for an open three-pointer. Clark immediately turned toward the officials, believing Jones had committed an illegal screen that warranted a foul call. She continued arguing the no-call and was quickly assessed a technical foul.
The technical was Clark’s sixth of the season, triggering an automatic $1,000 fine under the WNBA’s escalating disciplinary policy.
League rules impose a $500 fine for each of a player’s first three technical fouls, $1,000 for technical fouls four through seven, and $1,500 for every technical foul thereafter. Players also receive an automatic one-game suspension after their eighth technical foul, with another suspension issued for every two technicals beyond that mark.
The latest fine capped a difficult week for the Fever superstar, who has found herself at the center of several off-court storylines despite continuing to shine on the hardwood.
Earlier in the week, Hall of Famer Kareem Abdul-Jabbar challenged the growing narrative that Clark has already become the face of the WNBA.
“Eleven members of Congress wrote a letter calling Caitlin Clark ‘the face of your league’ — at least they got the marketing department’s talking point right,” Abdul-Jabbar said.
He continued by acknowledging Clark’s talent while emphasizing the accomplishments of other league stars.
“Don’t get me wrong, Clark is a very good, possibly even a great, player. But calling any one player the face of the league, absent the sort of on-court and cross-platform dominance of a Michael Jordan or a LeBron James, is an insult to an awful lot of great players, starting with A’ja Wilson, who has won three titles and four MVP awards in her first seven years in the WNBA.”
Clark also made headlines after publicly criticizing the league’s officiating following Indiana’s game against the Golden State Valkyries. Her frustration with referees carried into Saturday’s matchup, resulting in yet another technical foul and another fine.
Yahoo Sports highlighted the latest incident on social media, posting: “Caitlin Clark is facing a $1,000 fine from the WNBA after picking up her sixth technical foul of the season. Clark picked up the tech after opposing a no-call on a screen during Saturday’s Liberty-Fever game.”
Despite the growing scrutiny surrounding Clark’s interactions with officials, the Fever remain focused on their playoff push. Indiana continues to rely heavily on its franchise guard, whose elite scoring, playmaking and competitive fire have helped transform the team into one of the WNBA’s most exciting contenders.
With two technical fouls separating Clark from an automatic one-game suspension, all eyes will remain on both her production and her emotions as the Fever continue their postseason chase.
