Disney's live-action remakes have been a hot topic of conversation over the last decade, particularly considering that not all of them have earned the best reviews. Movies like 2019's The Lion King and 2025's Lilo & Stitch found the right formula for many fans, as they both grossed over $1 billion at the global box office (The Lion King becoming one of the 10 highest-grossing movies in film history). However, the company is in the midst of a rough patch with these kinds of movies, as the live-action Moana remake earned mostly negative reviews from critics and only grossed $115 million in its global opening.
Looking ahead, Disney has no plans to stop developing these remakes, although the studio may have to look at how to give them a better chance to succeed. The studio recently started production on a live-action revival of 2010's Tangled, which will feature Teagan Croft as Rapunzel, Milo Manheim as Flynn Rider/Eugene Fitzherbert, and Kathryn Hahn as Mother Gothel. A second Lilo & Stitch movie is in development, and rumors have teased a potential Hercules remake from director Guy Ritchie and producers Joe and Anthony Russo. Now, another of these live-action movies has been confirmed, but with an interesting twist.
First reported by Deadline, Oscar-nominated actor Colman Domingo is looking to co-write a live-action take on Disney's 2009 animated movie The Princess and the Frog. While it does not appear to be a live-action remake of the original movie, it is reportedly being developed as an untitled story centered on Princess Tiana. Domingo is said to be writing the project with Tony-nominated director Robert O'Hara, known for his work on Slave Play. Notably, The Princess and the Frog was the last Walt Disney Animation movie that was created through hand-drawn animation rather than 3D CGI.
This marks a different direction for Disney, as it is one of the few times a live-action story has taken an already-established leading character and built a new story around them. While this has been done with villains in movies like Angelina Jolie's two Maleficent films and Emma Stone's Cruella (which is set to get a sequel), this would be the first time one Disney princess gets a story that was not previously told in an animated movie.
For now, there are no details on who might play Princess Tiana, nor is there information on when Disney plans to go into production on the movie and release it.
