The hit Star Wars series The Mandalorian has been on ice since 2023, and following Grogu's move to the big screen, there have been a lot of questions remaining about the future of the Disney+ show. While an official announcement has not been made about The Mandalorian being canceled, Lucasfilm appears to have quietly confirmed that the series is considered to be finished.
On the official Star Wars account on YouTube, a video was uploaded under the title, "Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu Behind the Scenes." While showing footage of the Disney+ series, it is accompanied by text listing The Mandalorian as running from 2019 to 2023. Putting the year Season 3 released as an end date rather than referring to The Mandalorian as an ongoing series strongly suggests that Lucasfilm doesn't see a fourth season being made for the show at this point in time.
Lucasfilm Sees The Mandalorian as Finished Since 2023
Jon Favreau, who created the series before directing The Mandalorian and Grogu, previously shared how there were plans at one point to make a fourth season. He claimed that there had been scripts written for Season 4, but that these were scrapped once Lucasfilm decided to change course by developing The Mandalorian and Grogu as a feature film instead. If a fourth season were to be made, it would mean starting the creative process over from scratch in order to follow the events of the movie.
“You can’t just take those scripts and turn them into a movie,” Favreau explained, via SFX magazine. “There were a lot of characters, it assumed you’d watched the whole show, and it was teeing up what was happening moving into [the second season of] Ahsoka. It was about Grand Admiral Thrawn and following the larger storyline [of this era of the Star Wars timeline].”
The Mandalorian and Grogu Wasn't as Successful as Planned
The new plan was likely to potentially continue the adventures of Grogu and Din Djarin on the big screen with follow-up films made for The Mandalorian and Grogu. However, the odds of that happening also seemed to diminish when the movie fell short of its box office expectations. It has made nearly $345 million worldwide, which is a low amount for a live-action Star Wars movie. It also had mixed reviews from critics.
Still, Lucasfilm isn't done exploring this part of the Star Wars universe just yet. One of The Mandalorian's spinoffs, Ahsoka, is set to return for its second season in 2027. Ahsoka was largely well-received by fans and critics when it was released in 2023, and better yet for the show, it drew very high viewership numbers on Disney+. If Season 2 turns out to be a success as well, a third season is possible, or perhaps even another project connected to The Mandalorian.
Additionally, The Mandalorian is being reimagined with a new release coming to Disney+. It's getting the LEGO animation treatment, which will condense the story into a special using LEGO versions of the characters. It will premiere on Disney+ on Sept. 2.
