More than two decades after Anne Hathawayascended to the throne of Genovia, her royal subjects have been waiting patiently for the return we've all been craving, and while Disney officially confirmed The Princess Diaries 3 was in development some time ago, meaningful updates have remained few and far between. However, Hathaway has finally explained why progress has been slower than many had hoped, and it's not great news.
Speaking on SiriusXM’s Radio Andy, Hathaway revealed that The Princess Diaries 3 has undergone a major creative reset and, in the meantime, she's having another baby. Although she says the team has finally found the right direction, it has meant abandoning the previous script and effectively starting over.
“I’m busy making baby number three, and that has sort of taken the place of knowing when exactly I can make Princess Diaries 3. I can say I think we had a story breakthrough. I think we are moving in the right direction. The script that we were working on — we kind of had to start over with this new direction, which is not the update I think anybody wants, but we all feel really good that this is gonna be the one.”
‘The Princess Diaries 3’ Is Still Moving Forward
Now, while restarting a screenplay isn't exactly the news people want to hear, at least it's obvious that Disney remains committed to getting the sequel right rather than rushing it into production. The actress had previously said the creative team was “constantly working” on the project, while director Adele Lim has also spoken enthusiastically about bringing Mia Thermopolis back to the big screen.
The original film premiered twenty-five years ago, which makes us feel unwell, and introduced us to the geeky Mia who unexpectedly learns she’s the future queen of Genovia, which is hardly the graduation gift you want to receive. The 2004 sequel, The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, expanded the kingdom and helped launch Chris Pine’s Hollywood career, for which we are grateful. Together, the first two films earned more than $300 million worldwide and, to this day, are two of Disney's most beloved post-1990s movies. Hathaway is already confirmed to return for the third film, while Julie Andrews and Pine have both previously expressed interest in reprising their roles, though neither has officially signed on.
No release date has been announced for The Princess Diaries 3 as yet, but the crowns and tiaras should probably start getting polished.
