Disney is still moving forward with several live-action remakes, despite the recent Moana hiccup. The next one is Tangled.
The live-action remake trend has included many hits, like 2015's Cinderella, 2017's Beauty and the Beast, and 2019's Aladdin. However, what they did differently was that they enriched the original story, instead of just adapting the original. After kicking off production in late June, set pictures just unveil the first look at the Tangled remake.
Tangled Is Currently in Production
The live-action remake of the 2010 hit animated film underwent some hiccups. The beautiful story of Rapunzel and Flynn Ryder/ Eugene has won over the hearts of many Disney lovers, and the film was a modest success. However, the animated film never received a sequel. Mandy Moore and Zachary Levi, who voiced Rapunzel and Flynn, respectively, returned for an animated Disney+ series that featured more adventures.
However, in 2021, Disney unveiled it was developing a live-action remake. Just like the animated film, which spent years in development, the live-action remake wasn't confirmed until December 2024. In 2025, Snow White hit theaters and saw probably one of Disney's biggest controversies of all time, so Tangled was briefly halted for several months in April.
The live-action remake was pushed forward again in October 2025 following the success of Lilo & Stitch. The live-action remake cast Teagen Croft and Milo Manheim as Rapunzel and Flynn, and the set pictures finally unveil the first look at the two of them. One of them shows Manheim in full Flynn costume, with the other showing Croft's magical braided Rapunzel hair. Some of the set photos also showed a prosthetic horse for the fan-favorite Maximus, as well as the kingdom and the plaza where the little girls braided Rapunzel's golden locks.
Aside from Croft, The White Lotus' Sarah Catherine Hook, Zombies 4: Dawn of the Vampires' Freya Skye, and Invasion's Olivia-Mai Barrett reportedly tested for Rapunzel, with Julie and the Phantoms' Charlie Gillespie and Gilli Jones also testing for Flynn.
The upcoming live-action remake also stars Kathryn Hahn as Mother Gothel and Diego Luna in an undisclosed, original role. The Tangled film kicked off production in June 2026 in Spain, and it's expected to last around eight months.
Disney Continues the Live-Action Remakes
Even though Disney had some setbacks with its live-action remakes, including Mulan and Snow White, the House of Mouse is pushing forward. That is, despite the recent poor performance of Moana. The adaptation of the 2016 hit animated film was slammed by critics, although it features a strong 89% approval score from audiences. However, it has barely grossed $121 million in its second weekend against a $250 million budget. With The Odyssey out in theaters and Spider-Man: Brand New Day up next, it's likely the film won't end up becoming a profitable affair.
Even so, Disney is not stopping. Aside from the upcoming Tangled remake, plans for a live-action remake of The Princess and the Frog are now in place, with Colman Domingo in talks to co-write the script.
The Tangled remake doesn't have a release date.
