The New York Yankees beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 8-5 on Monday with a benches-clearing incident in between. But even the morning after, the manager thinks his team was in the right. Yankees manager Aaron Boone says that Jose Caballero did not do anything wrong before the benches cleared.
“He didn’t really do anything last night. I don’t know what Dennis [Santana] was doing,” Boone said on Jomboy Media’s Talkin’ Yanks podcast. Jimmy O’Brein responded, “Well, he just did his routine to annoy pitchers, and it annoyed the pitcher.”
Boone agreed, “Right, but then pitchers sometimes hold the ball and do their clock games, and that’s okay, apparently. Which I agree, it is okay. If you want to do that as a pitcher to disrupt rhythm. But then I think the hitter should have the right to have their own rhythm to try to negate that a little bit.”
Caballero has made a routine of looking at the pitcher just as the pitch clock hits eight seconds. The Yankees shortstop is trying to flummox the pitcher by using the clock to his advantage. It has annoyed pitchers in the past, and this time it emptied the benches.
The Yankees’ offense needed a boost after a sluggish series against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Jazz Chisholm Jr gave them the boost with two homers in the first three innings against the Pirates on Monday night. Caballero pulled his weight, picking up two hits and two RBI from the nine hole.
Caballero and Anthony Volpe are locked in a season-long battle for the starting shortstop battle. Moments like this are why Yankees fans support Caballero’s candidacy for the October starter. While he has struggled offensively of late, his peskiness is making him fans across New York City.
The Pirates and Yankees play a doubleheader on Wednesday after a Tuesday rainout.
