The New England Patriots are ahead of schedule. In head coach Mike Vrabel’s first year in charge, the Patriots reclaimed the AFC East crown and won the AFC Championship. However, New England’s flaws were exposed in their Super Bowl LX loss in February to the Seattle Seahawks. However, ESPN’s Adam Schefter thinks as long as the Pats have Drake Maye under center, they have a good shot at the playoffs once again. NFL on ESPN shared Schefter’s take on New England’s odds via X, formerly Twitter.
“As long as he’s playing quarterback, that team always is going to have a chance to make a real playoff run,” Schefter stated emphatically on NFL Live Tuesday evening.
Maye’s breakthrough sophomore campaign last year led to a host of accolades, including an NFL MVP runner-up finish. Entering his third season as the Patriots’ signal caller, Maye is looking to capture his first Lombardi Trophy. With a season in offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels’ system under his belt, another leap into NFL superstardom isn’t out of the question.
The Patriots’ brass looked to enhance Maye’s chances at greatness in year three even more this offseason. The two big moves? A trade involving multiple picks for Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver A.J. Brown, who now becomes Maye’s number one target. Next, a big-money free agent deal was given to ex-Green Bay Packers wideout Romeo Doubs, who becomes the new second option. First-rounder Caleb Lomu will look to take over at right tackle. Will these moves, plus a few other tweaks, bring another Lombardi Trophy back to Foxborough? If so, Maye could be on his way to chasing down a true icon: his spiritual predecessor, Thomas Edward Patrick Brady Jr.
