Cincinnati Reds relief pitcher Caleb Ferguson was not happy with umpire Bill Miller during Monday’s 8-0 loss against the Seattle Mariners. Of course, Ferguson isn’t the first baseball player to be upset with an umpire. However, Ferguson made things personal when he seemingly directed a verbal NSFW insult toward the umpire after he got in the way of a batted ball.

On Tuesday, Ferguson apologized for what he said, via C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic.
“Reds reliever Caleb Ferguson apologized for his outburst directed at umpire Bill Miller in Monday’s loss in Seattle. ‘Very unprofessional on my part.’ He said he hopes to seek out Miller before the game to apologize in person,” Rosecrans reported.
Ferguson apologized publicly and also wants to speak to Miller to apologize in person before the game. It was a moment of frustration on the mound for Ferguson, but he clearly is ready to move on and apologize to the umpire.
Ferguson joined the Reds this past offseason. He is a veteran reliever with a proven track record. However, Ferguson has been limited to just 21 outings this season due to injury. He currently holds a 3.98 ERA across 21 outings.
The Reds have endured a difficult season overall. It will be interesting to see if Ferguson ends up being mentioned in trade rumors. A number of contenders around the MLB world would surely be open to acquiring the veteran southpaw.
Either way, the Reds are expected to be sellers before the MLB trade deadline.
