The Lauries live in Henderson and have a net worth of $17.8 billion, according to Forbes. Additionally, significant portions of their wealth are connected to Walmart stock.
Walton Laurie is the younger daughter of Bud Walton, the brother and business partner of Walmart founder Sam Walton.
Her sister is Ann Walton Kroenke, the wife of Stan Kroenke. While their business interests are expansive, the Walmart family remains deeply associated with U.S. sports franchises.
The Lauries are the latest to consider an NBA expansion bid. This brings even more spotlight to the influence of prominent Walmart legacy families in sports ownership.
Two groups, led by Golden Knights owner Bill Foley and former Phoenix Suns owner Jerry Colangelo, have already announced their interest. In contrast, the Walmart heirs continue to weigh their options quietly.
It was recently reported that former Walt Disney Company CEO Bob Iger and investment fund CEO Joshua Kushner are also considering a bid. Though neither has announced a bid, Walmart is not directly linked to these groups. However, their involvement raises the stakes.
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver stated during Summer League in Las Vegas last week that multiple groups are preparing to submit their proposals, and speculation continues about whether Walmart connections could shape the final outcomes.
