A judge has found a Las Vegas sports betting figure in contempt of court. He warned he will face jail unless he promptly turns over assets. Betting cases such as this frequently generate broad media attention.
Last July, District Judge Timothy Williams ordered David Oancea to pay $30.2 million to an upscale vacation rental agency in Mexico called Cabo Platinum. Cabo Platinum accused him of sabotaging rental reservations for his properties in Mexico. This is far from his base in Las Vegas.
Oancea, known as “Vegas Dave,” has over 9 million Instagram followers. He appeared in the Showtime docuseries “Action,” which examines sports gambling culture with a strong focus on Las Vegas personalities. The program discussed betting as a central theme in Oancea’s public profile.
He was ordered not to block access to properties or interfere with agreed rentals. However, court documents state he did not comply with the order from the Las Vegas court.
Williams ordered Oancea to turn over his Richard Mille watch, Birkin bags, cryptocurrency holdings, and interests in three Mexican properties within two weeks of a September hearing. This hearing was linked to the Las Vegas trial. The case has drawn attention from betting enthusiasts due to the sums and personalities involved.
Oancea claimed the property was no longer his and did not turn over any assets, according to Clark Newberry. During a six-day evidentiary hearing held in Las Vegas, the judge called parts of his testimony “false” and cited “willful noncompliance.”
The judge ordered that to “purge” his contempt, Oancea must hand over the Mille watch and three Birkin bags or cash instead, plus over $375,000 in cryptocurrency. Las Vegas courts further ruled he must also execute a power of attorney granting Cabo Platinum principal Mishan Andre authority over his interests in Mexican properties.
He must meet these conditions by Aug. 5 or surrender and remain in custody until he complies, according to the latest Las Vegas ruling. In summary, this story is a cautionary tale about betting fortunes and the consequences of legal disputes.
Clark Newberry also awarded Cabo Platinum almost $294,000 in attorneys’ fees and $17,000 in costs, as per the Las Vegas proceedings.
Oancea and his attorneys did not respond to requests for comment on Monday but expressed their objections in a court filing in Las Vegas.
