LaVar Ball, father of NBA guard Lonzo Ball and Hornets star LaMelo Ball, says he had a $2 billion payday sitting right in front of him, and he still walked away from it. The outspoken founder of Big Baller Brand claimed he turned down an offer to take the company public.
“Everybody was like, ‘Hey, big baller, do your thing and go public.’ I said, ‘No, I ain’t doing that,'” Ball said, insisting he prefers keeping full control over a massive financial windfall. “I understand I can be a billionaire overnight if I go public.”
Ball explained why he has resisted outside investment, framing it as the key to the brand’s staying power.
“The brand is good because I’m not in the red and I don’t have no investors,” Ball said.
He went a step further, claiming he would turn down an even bigger number if it ever came his way. “If they offer me $2 billion tomorrow, I’ll be like for Triple B’s, ‘No, I’m cool.’ And folks be like, ‘You stupid of all,'” Ball said.
To make his case for the brand’s value, Ball pointed to its ability to mark up basic merchandise purely through name recognition.
“This is how you know your brand is good. I can take a $3 shirt and put Triple B’s on it. Now it’s a $60 shirt,” Ball said.
The claims fit a well-worn pattern for Ball, who has made headlines for outlandish valuations of his company for nearly a decade. He first sought a $1 billion package deal for sons Lonzo, LiAngelo, and LaMelo back in 2017, then raised his own asking price to $3 billion that same year after major shoe companies passed.
Financial records have long painted a far more modest picture of the brand’s actual worth, with Big Baller Brand drawing scrutiny over unresolved customer complaints and a co-founder accused of misappropriating funds before Lonzo eventually distanced himself from the company entirely.
Regardless of the company’s real valuation, Ball remains as confident as ever in Big Baller Brand’s earning potential, insisting he has built something no outside investor could ever talk him out of walking away from.
