It’s been three seasons since Udonis Haslem last played in the NBA, the 2022-23 season with the Miami Heat, the only franchise he ever knew. But while he’s transitioned to a role as an on-air analyst as part of Amazon Prime’s NBA coverage, he can still set the tone on the court.
The Heat social media team recently posted footage from a recent practice sessions for what appeared to be younger players, some of the Summer League squad, and Udonis Haslem was front and center barking out instruction and even throwing down a dunk at the end of the clip.
The Heat made a splash this offseason with the acquisition of Giannis Antetokounmpo via trade with the Milwaukee Bucks, and they’re reportedly still in the mix for LeBron James in free agency, but very few players hold the type of respect from the franchise as Haslem does.
Haslem played 20 years in the NBA, all with the Heat. He went undrafted in the 2004 NBA Draft, and began his professional career in France after he was cut by the Atlanta Hawks before the start of the 2002-03 season.
He joined the Heat as a free agent in 2003-04, and the rest, as they say, is history. He earned a reputation as being a hard-nosed defensive player and rugged rebounder, although he did have a couple of seasons in which he averaged double digits in scoring.
He was part of all three Heat championships teams in 2006, 2012 and 2013. Towards the end of his career, he became more valuable for what he brought in the locker room than his on-court production.
