A tree trimming crew is being credited with rescuing a teenager from a burning home in Antelope before firefighters arrived Tuesday.
Cortland Johnson, owner of Nexus Tree Solutions, said his crew was working at a home on Hidden Meadow Way when they noticed flames shooting from a house across the street.
Johnson said he immediately directed his crew to help. After knocking on doors and windows without getting a response, he decided they needed to get inside.
Johnson broke a window with a rock, allowing one of his coworkers to climb into the home. The worker found a young man on the upper floor who appeared to be frozen in shock, and the crew safely led him out of the house.
Johnson said the fire spread rapidly, growing from a small fire to one that engulfed the home in about 90 seconds.
Firefighters later arrived and used multiple hose lines to bring the fire under control. The flames spread from the original home to a neighboring house, leaving both with severe damage. No injuries were reported.
Neighbor Patty Hansen, who was outside tending to her flowers when the fire began, called the rescue heroic and said it was fortunate the tree crew was working nearby.
Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District said preliminary information indicates the fire started outside the home before spreading inside. The cause remains under investigation.
