A young child has died from complications one month after he was found in the pool of an Arizona apartment complex.

In a statement to PEOPLE on Monday, July 20, a spokesperson for the Phoenix Police Department confirmed that a 3-year-old died following an incident on Colter Street, north of Camelback Road, near 11th Avenue.

The child’s identity has not been released, but PPD added that the Maricopa County Medical Examiner ruled the cause of death to be complications of a drowning.

The incident happened on June 19, AZ Family and KPNX reported.

A resident who lived in the complex saw the boy, who appeared to be unresponsive in the pool, and immediately dialed 911, per AZ Family. The child’s father arrived at the scene a short time later.

It was unclear how long the child had been in the water, but neither the witness nor the boy’s father knew how to do CPR and needed to be talked through the process by a dispatcher, AZ Family said, citing local firefighters.

After the rescue, the child was listed in “extremely critical condition,” KPNX reported.

Martín Zaragosa, 28, was returning home from work when he discovered the child. He told KPNX he initially wasn’t sure if the victim was a child or a doll floating in the pool.

Zaragosa said he saw the child floating face down and pulled him out before the father arrived at the pool and also tried to help.

“Everybody came as fast as they could,” he said of paramedics and first responders.

The child’s father, who also has not been publicly identified, “fell to the ground” after he was not able to assist with CPR, resulting in him being taken to a hospital in “stable” condition, KPNX reported, citing the fire department.

Video footage shown by the local news station showed that there was a fence surrounding the pool; however, AZ Family reported that it was unclear if it was locked or how the child entered the pool.

The case is now closed, and no arrests have been made, PPD tells PEOPLE.

Boxing star Hannah Rapp was killed while biking after boyfriend made perfectly innocent gesture at reckless driver: cops

It’s a gesture that any cyclist has probably made at a car that veered too close — and cops say it cost boxing star Hannah Rapp her life. Rapp, 26, an up-and-coming featherweight fighter, was cycling along a two-lane highway, FM 159, in Brazos County, Texas, on Saturday, when investigators say 31-year-old Charles Medina overtook her and her boyfriend Will Pollalis in his car with just a foot to spare. Pollalis yelled at the driver and raised his...
