The San Antonio Spurs fell just shy of winning a title after being defeated by the New York Knicks in six games in the NBA Finals. Despite that, the future remains bright for the organization, especially with Victor Wembanyama not even in his prime yet. With the club aiming for another deep playoff run, former NBA star Tracy McGrady shared a huge prediction for Wembanyama’s 2026-27 campaign.
In the latest episode of “Cousins,” McGrady predicted that the 22-year-old center will win the MVP Award, along with the Defensive Player of the Year Award next season. The Hall of Famer thinks next year Wembanyama will completely take over the NBA as the league’s best player.
“[Victor Wembanyama is] going to win Defensive Player of the Year. He’s gonna win MVP. He’s gonna win the in-season Tournament MVP. He’s going to sweep,” McGrady claimed. “For me, I think because he’s going to be motivated and [the Spurs] had a big letdown, disappointment this year [in the Finals], I’m going San Antonio Spurs to be right back in that position and to win a championship [next season].”

If Victor Wembanyama were to take home the MVP and DPOY next year, he would become just the fourth player in NBA history to accomplish that single-season feat. The only three players to win the MVP and DPOY in the same year are Michael Jordan (1987-88), Hakeem Olajuwon (1993-94), and Giannis Antetokounmpo (2019-20).
Wembanyama has already won the DPOY once in his career, having won the highly coveted award just this last season. He was in the mix to win the MVP this year as well, but finished third in the race behind Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who won the award, and Nikola Jokic. The three-year veteran also has a Rookie of the Year Award to his name thanks to his efforts in the 2023-24 campaign.
For Wemby to take home the MVP and DPOY, he’ll have to step his game up a notch, which is certainly in the realm of possibilities. Last season, the Spurs star averaged 25.0 points (career-high), 11.5 rebounds (career-high), 3.1 assists, 1.0 steals, and 3.1 blocks (led the NBA) per game. He hit those numbers while shooting 51.2% from the field (career-high) and 34.9% from three-point range.
