Victor Wembanyama led the San Antonio Spurs to the 2026 NBA Finals as a 22-year-old superstar this past season.
The 7-foot-4 Frenchman was the unanimous Defensive Player of the Year and finished third in NBA MVP voting behind Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Nikola Jokic.
Wembanyama was Western Conference Finals MVP after leading the Spurs past the Oklahoma City Thunder. San Antonio ultimately ran out of steam in the championship series, falling to the New York Knicks in five games.
Retired NBA star Tracy McGrady believes this NBA Finals loss will motivate Wembanyama to come back even stronger this coming season.
In fact, McGrady predicts he’ll sweep every NBA award and lead the Spurs to a championship title in 2026-27.
“I’m sure he’s going to come back bigger and stronger. I’m sure he’s hearing where he needs to operate for him to be the most effective for his team. So all this stuff is coming into play to build this creative player that’s going to come back stronger,” McGrady said. “He’s going to win Defensive Player of the Year. He’s gonna win MVP. He’s gonna win the in-season Tournament MVP. He’s going to sweep.”
“I think because he’s going to be motivated and they had a big let down and disappointment this year, I’m going San Antonio Spurs to be right back in that position and to win a championship,” McGrady concluded.
Wembanyama averaged 25 points, 11.5 rebounds and a league-leading 3.1 blocks per game in his third NBA season, notching his second career All-Star selection.
