The Philadelphia Phillies have managed to work their way back into contention after an incredibly cold start to the 2026 season. However, Trea Turner has been struggling all year at the shortstop position and has become a bit of a liability on defense. With the club refusing to make a change, one well-known sports radio host calls out the franchise for keeping Turner in the infield.
Joe DeCamera of “Sports Radio 94WIP,” a radio show dedicated to sports in Philadelphia, blasted the Phillies in the latest episode on Tuesday for not moving Turner to the outfield. DeCamera claims that the club is not doing everything necessary to win games because of the decision-making this season.
“They don’t do all they can do to be all that they can be. Trea Turner should have been moved to centerfield prior to [Monday’s 10-7 win over the Dodgers],” DeCamera stated. “Here’s the deal, guys. Trea Turner, who had a magnificent game at the plate [against the Dodgers], one of the best of his career. “It’s why many of us point our finger at the Phillies and say, ‘We don’t believe they’re doing everything to win the World Series.’ … It is accurate to say they don’t do all they can do to be all that they can be. Trea Turner should have been moved to center field prior to last night, and I don’t mean the day before last night, I mean in the offseason.”
The 12-year veteran has been okay offensively throughout the 2026 campaign. He entered Tuesday’s game against the Los Angeles Dodgers with 99 hits, 24 home runs, and 40 RBIs with 17 stolen bases through 402 at-bats. He owns a .246 batting average and .296 OBP with the second half of the season underway.
But that’s the cool side of the pillow when it comes to Trea Turner. The Dr. Jekyll of his Mr. Hyde, if you will. Defensively, the three-time All-Star has committed a league-high 15 errors this season. He also owns a .958 fielding percentage, which is well below the league average (.975 to .980). Perhaps changes will be made at some point. But until then, the Phillies will continue playing Turner at shortstop.
