Some may say that the FIFA World Cup came to an anti-climactic end as Spain ended up 1-0 winners against Argentina in the Final after Enzo Fernandez received a red card at the 90+3 mark. After what had been a goal-filled, dramatic tournament right from the get go, the final churned out just one goal, which came off the boot of Barcelona striker Ferran Torres right at the very end.
But well, Fox has announced that the match was also the “most-watched English-language soccer telecast in U.S. history,” per a post on X by ClutchPoints. The tournament averaged 38.9 million viewers and had a peak viewership of 51.7 million viewers in the US.
Per the eye test, the tournament, which the USA co-hosted alongside Mexico and Canada, was a major success across the board. However, the numbers more than prove that and merely prove the scale of the tournament considering Fox had the broadcasting rights only for the US.
And well, the game may have been decided by a single goal. However, it had multiple major storylines, with Lionel Messi more than likely to have played for the final time for his nation. He is expected to announce his retirement in the coming time, although the kind of tournament he had suggests that he may have enough in his tank to last another four years.
Meanwhile, Spain were led in attack by Barcelona prodigy Lamine Yamal, who may have kickstarted his own era of success and celebrated his 19th birthday on July 13. In addition to missing out on the big prize, Messi also lost out on the Golden Ball, which was awarded to Rodri despite Messi producing eight goals and four assists through the tournament.
The FIFA World Cup undoubtedly gave fans a catalogue of memorable moments, and while the USMNT themselves may have gone out bitterly in a 4-1 loss to Belgium at the Round of 16 stage, there is little doubt that the entire country came together to embrace the tournament right from the get-go.
