A DNA test confirmed paternity, but the legendary musician has never wanted to meet his son.
British singer Tom Jones celebrated his 86th birthday in June, and despite entering his ninth decade of life, he continues performing and has concerts scheduled months in advance. According to foreign media reports, his wealth is estimated at more than $300 million.
That is why the fate of his son Jonathan Berkery has shocked the public for years. Jonathan is reportedly homeless, living in poverty, and begging to survive.
Tom Jones was married to his wife Melinda for 59 years until her death in 2016, but he was not faithful during their marriage. He often cheated on her, and Jonathan was born as the result of one of those affairs. During his 1987 tour of the United States, Jones had an affair with former model Katherine Berkery.
She worked as a hotel manager, and after spending three days with Jones, she discovered that she was pregnant. She was 24 years old and gave birth to Jonathan in June 1988. She told the singer that the boy was his son, but he did not believe her. Months of legal battles followed as she tried to get him to acknowledge paternity.
In 1989, a US court ruling confirmed through DNA testing that Tom Jones was the child’s father.
He continued to deny it
However, the musician continued to deny it. Jones paid Katherine £50,000 in an out-of-court settlement and was required to pay £1,700 per month in child support until Jonathan turned 18.
Jones was never present in Jonathan’s life, and reports claim that the two have never even met.
“That was not something I planned. If I had planned it, I would have arranged something other than financial support. But I didn’t. I simply fell for the seduction,” Jones once said while commenting on his affair with Katherine.
Jonathan is now 38 years old, and his personal life has reportedly been extremely difficult. Foreign media recently reported that he lives in a homeless shelter, while in the past he slept on benches in city parks.
As a teenager, he fell into bad company and struggled with drug addiction because he could not cope with feeling rejected by his father. He was reportedly arrested several times for drug-related offenses.
