American actress and director Olivia Wilde said that the negative public reaction during her relationship with singer Harry Styles damaged both her career and her private life.
Wilde dated the former One Direction member for almost two years, and they broke up in 2022, according to AOL.
The consequences of media attention
Speaking on Louis Theroux’s podcast, 42-year-old Wilde reflected on the numerous controversies surrounding her 2022 film Don’t Worry Darling. She met 32-year-old Styles while working on the movie. She pointed out that the intense media attention affected the film and also had consequences for her personal life.
"It hurt me for sure, because I was so naive up until that point about the grinder, the garbage disposal that the internet can be." she said.
"So, at this point, I have enough of a perspective on it, and that allows me to experience it as a fascinating time.
It is interesting to witness a tornado from the inside.
But now I look back and I think, 'oh, the people were being given headlines without context, and it's a natural instinct to start trying to fill those in'."
Wilde is currently promoting her new film
Wilde is currently promoting The Invite, her third feature film as a director, in which she also stars. The story follows married couple Joe and Angela, played by Seth Rogen and Wilde, whose troubled relationship becomes even more complicated during a dinner with their neighbors, portrayed by Penélope Cruz and Edward Norton.
The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2026 and is currently playing in US cinemas.
The actress will also appear in the upcoming film Behemoth! by Tony Gilroy alongside Pedro Pascal. In a recent interview, she revealed that she is preparing to direct another movie, which she described as both heartbreaking and funny, although its title has not yet been revealed.
From marriage to Tao Ruspoli to her relationship with Caspar Jopling
Wilde married Italian director and musician Tao Ruspoli in 2003 at the age of 19.
They got married only a few months after starting their relationship, and the actress later described their marriage as romantic, bohemian, and slightly crazy.
