The introduction of a halftime concert during the World Cup final, designed as a major global spectacle, immediately raised questions about how much such a production would cost. Public interest increased further after it was confirmed that some of the world's biggest music stars, including Madonna, BTS, Justin Bieber, the Muppets and Shakira, would take part in the short performance.
Eleven minutes of spectacle and many reactions
The show was opened by Madonna, who performed her hit song "Music" with a demanding choreography and impressive production. After her performance, the K-pop group BTS performed their song "Dynamite", while Justin Bieber changed the atmosphere with an acoustic guitar performance of "Everything Hallelujah". The final part belonged to Shakira, who danced to the tournament's official anthem "Dai Dai".
Although it lasted only eleven minutes, the performance was not without criticism. Some members of the public believe that the concert highlighted the commercial side of the tournament and was primarily designed to attract American viewers. At the same time, many people wanted to know how much FIFA spent on bringing in such a large number of famous performers.
Stars did not receive payment
The answer is that the biggest stars at this year's final were not paid for their performances. Similar to the Super Bowl halftime show, the artists did not receive a fee but instead supported the event as part of a charitable initiative.
According to The Athletic, a source from the organization confirmed that "the musicians donated their time and performance" to support the work of Global Citizen, an organization focused on social issues and improving living conditions around the world.
The goal is to raise $100 million
The concert is part of a joint FIFA and Global Citizen initiative aimed at raising $100 million for education programs and projects that provide children around the world with better opportunities, including greater access to football.
"The world is coming together around the biggest football match, and this historic performance will also focus attention on a greater cause. It will support the FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund and our shared mission to provide children around the world with access to quality education and opportunities to play football," FIFA president Gianni Infantino said while announcing the concert.
"It will be a celebration of football, unity and humanity that will continue to resonate long after the final whistle," he added.
Justin Bieber also highlighted the importance of the project.
"The FIFA World Cup brings the world together in a way nothing else can.
I’m grateful to be part of this Halftime Show, and even more grateful knowing it’s already helping expand access to education for children around the world.”
