Josh Hartnett was considered one of the most attractive young actors in Hollywood at the turn of the millennium, but he later stepped away from the spotlight to focus on his family.
American actor Josh Hartnett attracted public attention in the late 1990s with his talent and charisma, quickly becoming one of Hollywood’s most promising young stars.
He was born on July 21, 1978, in Saint Paul, Minnesota, and grew up in a family that encouraged his creativity and artistic interests. Although he seriously trained in American football during his youth, a knee injury changed his career path and pushed him toward acting.
His rise to fame
After high school, Hartnett moved to New York, where he briefly studied acting before moving to Los Angeles to pursue a career in Hollywood. He gained recognition for his role in the series Cracker in 1997 and quickly became a teen idol. A year later, he appeared in Halloween H20: 20 Years Later, followed by roles in films such as The Virgin Suicides, Pearl Harbor, Black Hawk Down, and 40 Days and 40 Nights.
At the time, Hartnett had a huge global fanbase of female admirers eagerly waiting for his next movie. Teen People named him one of the “21 Hottest Stars Under 21,” while People included him among the 50 Most Beautiful People in the World in 2002. Bliss magazine also ranked him as the third most attractive man in the world that same year.
His success brought him even more opportunities. Director Brett Ratner approached him several times with the idea of playing Clark Kent, also known as Superman. However, Hartnett was not ready to commit to a 10-year contract and multiple films.
“That simply wasn’t the project I wanted to make. I turned down other superhero roles as well,” the actor said at the time.
There were also reports that Christopher Nolan considered offering him the role of Batman, but that never happened, and Christian Bale later became famous for portraying the character.
Relationships and stepping away from Hollywood
Many people considered Hartnett one of the most attractive men in the world, and some of his famous co-stars apparently felt the same. He met Scarlett Johansson in 2005 while filming The Black Dahlia, in which they both starred. Hartnett later said that filming intimate scenes with Johansson was uncomfortable because they were also a real-life couple.
“Those scenes are always awkward because you have a bunch of sweaty guys sitting there watching you, and you just hope it feels intimate and real,” he said.
After filming ended, paparazzi began following the new couple. Media outlets described their relationship as “logical” because both were at the peak of their careers and seemed to have a bright future ahead. They broke up two years later, reportedly due to their busy filming schedules.
Years later, Hartnett said he would not recommend younger actors date their co-stars because they often end up in complicated situations.
In August 2012, he met British actress Tamsin Egerton, whom he later married. The couple has four children together. They keep their relationship away from the public eye, and Hartnett took a break from acting for a period of time to focus on his family.
In recent years, he returned to acting and appeared in several projects. His latest film was Fight or Flight, released last year.
