Sony's Spider-Verse might well be done on paper, but that doesn't mean there isn't a big future ahead for Venom. While the interconnected franchise officially came to an end following Kraven the Hunter, to the relief of many people, its most successful character has just made a shocking appearance ahead of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and it's good to see our buddy Eddie Brock, even if we weren't expecting this at all.
Venom was an undeniable success as a character for Sony despite the fact that the Sony Spider-Man Universe struggled to find an audience. Released in 2018, Venom earned more than $856 million worldwide and spawned two sequels, making Eddie Brock the clear standout of Sony’s attempt to build a Spider-Man universe without Spider-Man. Presumably because people like Tom Hardy and because Venom is really funny, whereas nobody really knows who Morbius is. The Venom trilogy has grossed over $1.8 billion collectively. Meanwhile, Morbius, Madame Web, and Kraven the Hunter each grossed less than $175 million.
Venom Returns With New LEGO Release
LEGO has officially unveiled its first-ever set based directly on Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, with a bust inspired by Tom Hardy‘s version of Venom from the 2018 film. Although Venom has appeared in LEGO products before, this marks the first time the company has produced a set specifically based on the character from the Sony movies, who also appeared in Spider-Man: No Way Home. The 413-piece display model retails for $49.99 and stands approximately 6.5 inches (17 cm) tall. It also includes a Venom minifigure modeled on his appearance in the original film, alongside features including a removable tongue — it's really funny reading that and not doing a double take — and sculpted detailing designed to recreate just how enormously muscular the symbiote version looks.
Whether this latest release signals more merchandise based on Sony’s now-defunct cinematic universe remains to be seen, but we aren't ruling anything out at this point. However, it does ensure the SSU has finally received an official LEGO set, even if it arrives years after the franchise itself came to an end.
Sony, meanwhile, has already shifted its focus back to Spider-Man himself. Spider-Man: Brand New Day arrives in theatres on July 31, while Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse is scheduled to follow in 2027. As for whether Venom appears again in Marvel's universe this time, we'd bet on it, especially since a piece of symbiote was left behind at the end of No Way Home.
