The video game adaptation sequel, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, which stars the likes of Chris Pratt,Charlie Day, Anya Taylor-Joy, and Jack Black, will forever be known as the first billion-dollar 2026 movie.
The target was then recently hit by Antoine Fuqua’s musical biopic, Michael, which followed up on a successful run in U.S. theaters by opening in Japan and finally crossing the line. But fear not, order looks ready to be restored, and another animated sequel looks set to hit $1 billion soon. In the U.S. alone, in its fifth weekend, Toy Story 5 made another $14.8 million and finished fourth in the domestic ranks. Not just a box office smash, the latest in the groundbreaking Pixar franchise is also a critical darling, earning a strong 92% score on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, alongside a 95% rating from audiences. Collider's Taylor Gates gave the movie an 8/10 rating in her review, saying, "The impressive fifth installment not only justifies its existence but feels like a necessary response to how much the world has changed in the past three decades."
