Tom Holland officially confirms the surprise director who shot his Spider-Man costume reveal

Audiences' first look at Tom Holland's return as Peter Parker in Spider-Man: Brand New Day was not a conventional trailer. It was a behind-the-scenes clip of the actor donning the latest design of the Marvel character's iconic costume.

A sneak peek at a superhero movie actor fully decked out in their beloved role's signature outfit is always bound to attract attention, but there was something about this promo that felt particularly special. Holland exclusively revealed to CBR just what that something is.

Tom Holland's Spider-Man Costume Reveal Video Was A Family Affair

The clip unveiling Tom Holland's new suit for Spider-Man: Brand New Day begins with a soundstage's double doors opening to reveal the silhouette of the English actor hopping from side to side. He then walks toward the camera and stops to ask, "Are we ready?" before the title of the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe installment flashes on a black background.

CBR's Sean O'Connell brought up the now-iconic promo during his interview with the Spider-Man actor, who also stars in director Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey this month. When O'Connell asked Holland if releasing the clip as early as Sony did was his idea, he dropped a major reveal about it in his response.

"I think there was a collective decision made, because we knew that we were going to Glasgow to shoot. And for the stuff that we wanted to shoot in Glasgow, there was going to be a lot of harnesses that were underneath the suit. And that really does disrupt the way the suit looks and feels. We wanted to make sure we gave the audience a real taste of what the suit was going to look like in all of its glory. My brother actually directed that little video. Harry did. So yeah, it was a group decision to release that video."

Harry Holland is best known, not only as Tom's younger brother (and twin sibling of Sam Holland), but also as the actor's assistant on the sets of the Apple TV original film Cherry and blockbusters Spider-Man: No Way Home and Uncharted. The 27-year-old has also led an acting career of his own and has even appeared alongside his older brother numerous times, such as for his debut appearance in 2012's The Impossible, and more recently cameoed as Haroldpool in Deadpool & Wolverine in 2024.

The Spider-Man: Brand New Day costume reveal video is far from Harry's first directorial effort, having helmed several short films like 2015's Tweet (in collaboration with Tom) and most recently 2022's Last Call, in which Tom also stars. However, the 23-second video is sure to be remembered as an important footnote on his resume moving forward.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day Launches A New Era For Tom Holland's Peter Parker

The aforementioned 2021 hit Spider-Man: No Way Home ended on a bittersweet note, with Peter Parker forced to save the Multiverse by wiping his reality's knowledge, not only of him being the superhero, but of him existing. On the bright side, the MCU's iteration of the webslinger now has a clean slate to build off from.

Audiences will soon be able to see Peter build off of that clean slate when Spider-Man: Brand New Day opens at the end of July. The story picks up four years after the events of No Way Home and sees the vigilante contend with a new villain and a concerning development to his arachnid-like abilities.

The Spider-Man: Brand New Day cast also includes returning franchise veterans Zendaya (Holland's real-life spouse) as Peter's former girlfriend Michelle "MJ" Jones-Watson, Jacob Batalon as Peter's former best friend Ned Leeds, Mark Ruffalo as Bruce "Hulk" Banner, and Jon Bernthal making his feature film debut as Frank "The Punisher" Castle.

Newcomers include Stranger Things' Sadie Sink in an undisclosed role, Emmy-winning Severance star Tramell Tillman as Department of Damage Control head Bill Metzger, and Marvin Jones III reprising his animated role from Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse as Tombstone. Assuming the reins from Sony and Marvel Studios' previous Spider-Man movie director, Jon Watts, is Destin Daniel Cretton, who previously helmed Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day swings into theaters July 31, 2026.
