Thornton pool and rec center evacuated due to threats

The Thornton City Pool and Margaret Carpenter Recreation Center were evacuated as a precaution while officers investigate threats made against the facilities.

Two city facilities in Thornton were evacuated Tuesday due to threats being made, police said.

The Thornton City Pool, located at E. 95th Avenue, and the Margaret Carpenter Recreation Center on Colorado Boulevard were evacuated as a precaution while officers investigate threats made against the facilities, the Thornton Police Department said. Police are asking people to avoid both areas, and both facilities are expected to be closed for the rest of the day.

In an update just after 4 p.m., police said they cleared the scene at the pool, and nothing suspicious was found. They were still searching the rec center.

Police said that reunification points were set up for those who were evacuated. If someone was evacuated from the City Pool, the reunification point is at Thornton Community Center, located at 2211 Eppinger Boulevard, which is next to the pool.

For people evacuated from the rec center, the reunification point is at Harley Brown Amphitheater, located at 3498 E. 112th Avenue near the rec center. Police said to enter from 112th Avenue on the north side of the park.

"If you have a family member or child at either facility, please go to the appropriate reunification point above," Thornton Police said.

This story is developing and will be updated as information comes in.
