Two boys, ages 12 and 14, who are charged with killing a man in Denver have multiple other criminal cases, 9NEWS Investigates has learned.
Both boys are also possible suspects in another murder in Denver, and one of them is facing charges in yet another shooting that wounded a teenager.
The boys have been in custody since July 1, the day after 33-year-old Christopher Nabors was shot to death after confronting them while they were breaking into or trying to steal his car near the intersection of West 43th Avenue and North Pecos Street.
They’ve been charged with first-degree murder in that case in juvenile court, but Denver prosecutors have said they will ask a judge to move the case to adult court. That process is likely to play out over months, but if a judge ultimately agrees, the boys would face a minimum of 40 years in prison if convicted of first-degree murder.
Because the cases are currently in juvenile court, 9NEWS is not naming them.
The 14-year-old is also accused of a shooting that same night near Park Avenue and East 20th Avenue that left a juvenile injured.
According to Denver police, both boys are also potential suspects in the June 24 killing of 19-year-old Jacob Lopez in the 15700 block of East Olmstead Place in Montbello. As with the Pecos murder, Lopez was shot after confronting someone who was breaking into his car, according to police.
Both boys have multiple other criminal cases in Denver, although it’s not clear what charges they face.
In addition, 9NEWS Investigates has confirmed that the 14-year-old has three criminal cases pending in Jefferson County, where he’s accused of stealing a car in February and then, in June, swiping another vehicle and committing an aggravated robbery.
