Supernatural's lasting impact on TV culture endures five years after the series ended. First aired in 2005 on The WB, the pilot caught lightning in a bottle and was quickly ordered for a full season. It proceeded to amass a cult following throughout its 15-season run — it's one of TV's most rewatchable shows, thanks to its "creature feature" premise. Supernatural's lore also transcended its "monster-of-the-week" format by focusing on the Winchester brothers, whose backstories were fleshed out over the course of the series. Fans are now in for a treat because two new spin-offs have been greenlit.
Supernatural followed Sam and Dean Winchester (played byJared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles) in their "hunting trips," where they track down ghosts, demons, monsters, cosmic entities, and everything in between. The show's character ensemble expanded in later seasons, but it's basically a two-hander — the overarching story revolved around the Winchester brothers. They solved so many cases together until the show's divisive ending, and it's hard to imagine them ever separating. But that's exactly what the new spin-offs are doing.
The Winchester brothers are splitting off into their own comic book series, Supernatural: Dean Winchester and Supernatural: Sam Winchester, both set for a fall 2026 release. The spin-offs will stem from Dynamite's Supernatural Special: Wayward, an upcoming one-shot issue that sets up the solo outings. The spin-offs are expected to expand the Supernatural universe but will remain interconnected. The Winchesters are set to take on individual paths, but why were they separated in the first place?
Written by Paulina Ganucheau with artwork from Kendall Goode, Supernatural: Sam Winchester takes Sam to a desolate Appalachian town after committing an irreversible mistake — he does "something to Dean that he can never take back," causing their rift. Guided by a series of mysterious phone calls, Sam seeks isolation in the mountains, only to stumble upon ancient horrors lurking within.
Penned by Chuck Brown with art from Rapha Lobosco, Supernatural: Dean Winchester finds Dean in New Orleans during Mardi Gras, taking on one of his father's unsolved cases. Dean makes headway with the investigation but soon faces a difficult decision — he may have to kill a god to close the case, but everything isn't what it seems. Both spin-offs pick up after Greg Pak's ongoing Supernatural comic book series, which is set to conclude on Aug. 26. Supernatural Special: Wayward, written by Ganucheau and illustrated by John Amor, is required reading because it establishes the event that separated the Winchester brothers.
The Supernatural spin-offs could divide the fan base into two camps, each favoring a Winchester brother. Whether you're team Sam or team Dean, you're still best off reading both series and their intertwined storylines. Dynamite has also confirmed more plans for the Winchesters, which means that despite their apparent conflict, they will eventually reunite to take on new enemies.
