Horror fans have been given a feast the last few years with one good film after another, like The Substance, Sinners, and 28 Years Later. 2026 alone has already brought films like Obsession, Backrooms, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, Lee Cronin's The Mummy, and Send Help, just to name a few. The love for the genre is only growing with a variety of filmmakers, both newbies and established, bringing their vision to life.
With the growing popularity of the genre, fans are eagerly waiting for the return of the next installment in the iconic Saw franchise. Over the course of the last two decades, Saw has proven to be one of the most successful horror series in history, grossing over $1 billion globally. Even though the movies often see high gross but low critical scores, each new entry is a delight for Jigsaw’s fans. So naturally, the excitement is running high among long-time fans despite the behind-the-scenes drama surrounding the canceled Saw XI.
Meanwhile, the franchise has lost its streaming home. From 2004’s Saw to 2023’s Saw X, including Jigsawand Saw: The Final Chapter, the entire franchise has left Netflix, as per ComicBook. While it landed on Netflix a couple of months ago, currently it’s unknown where Jigsaw’s tale will land next.
What’s Next for the 'Saw' Franchise?
After the production delays and cancellation of Saw XI, Blumhouse bought stakes in the franchise to reboot and reinvent it. Original creators James Wan and Leigh Whannell are back at the helm, so they are hard at work to bring Jigsaw back to the big screen. Wan previously revealed that the idea is to do something different to “reach out to a new generation that didn’t grow up with it.”
Played by Tobin Bell, Jigsaw wreaked havoc on people who didn’t appreciate life, making him one of the most interesting and delicious slasher villains in the history of the genre. His ability to study his targets and then find inventive ways to kill them makes him stand apart, and that’s something the next film seems to be capitalizing on. Wan further shared his plan, adding that the team wants to “recapture the spirit of that first film and revisit Jigsaw’s philosophy, which is that he goes after people who don’t appreciate their lives. If you’re a scumbag, but you appreciate your life, he doesn’t see you as someone who’s wasting your life, so I want to go back to what we touched on in the first movie with regard to that.”
