Sydney Sweeney is set to lead the long-awaited adaptation of one of the most iconic sci-fi action anime properties of all time. Based on the 1979 series Mobile Suit Gundam, The Housemaid star is trading psychological thrillers for giant mechs in the highly anticipated film from the most popular streamer in the game.
Netflix and Legendary Entertainment's upcoming live-action Gundam film has officially wrapped production, as reported by What's on Netflix. The project began filming in April, with Sweet Tooth's Jim Mickle directing a star-studded cast led by Sweeney, Noah Centineo (Street Fighter), Michael Mando (Spider-Man: Brand New Day), Jason Isaacs (The White Lotus), Shioli Kutsuna (Deadpool & Wolverine), Jackson White (Ambulance), and many more. Gundam does not currently have a release date, but it is expected to debut exclusively on Netflix.
While official plot details are slim, Gundam has been officially described by Netflix as an original story that "follows rival mech pilots fighting on opposite sides of a decades-long war between Earth and its former space colonies." Sweeney and Centineo are expected to play the rival mech pilots, whose forbidden romance blossoms in the midst of the explosive war between colonies. Netflix has promised fans that the live-action adaptation contains the "awe-inspiring battles, intimate human emotion, and an epic cinematic scale" of the original anime.
The original 1979 Mobile Suit Gundam anime followed the space colonies of the Principality of Zeon waging a war for independence against the Earth Federation. As the title suggests, the epic battles are not fought in typical fashion, but inside giant mechs the size of kaijus like Godzilla and Kong. While Netflix's Gundam seems to be taking the concept and infusing it with an original romantic plot, it does have similarities to the 1996 anime series Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team. The OVA featured an Earth Federation pilot questioning his place in the war after falling in love with a soldier from the Principality of Zeon.
Sweeney tackling Gundam comes after she tried her hand at blockbuster filmmaking with Sony Pictures' Madame Web in 2024, which was a financial and critical failure. However, she now leads the successful The Housemaid franchise, which is officially set to receive a sequel, hitting theaters in December 2027. Gundam could be her next popular entry in her filmography, potentially setting up another major film series for years to come.
