Former NBC Today Show host Savannah Guthrie put a brave front while simultaneously searching for her 84-year-old mother, Nancy Guthrie. Within two months after her mother went missing, the broadcaster returned to work. But was it too soon for her to return even before she was emotionally prepared? Seems like it because her friends reportedly said that the decision is impacting her mental health.
A source close to Savannah Guthrie told Radar Online, “Poor Savannah is in emotional free-fall right now. She’s a total shell of herself – you only need to look at her to see how much she’s suffering.”
Savannah’s mother went missing from her Tucson home at midnight on February 1. As per reports, NBC executives requested that the broadcaster take as much time as she wanted, but she returned to work within two months, i.e., on April 6.
A tipster said, “There are a lot of people – both at work and within her friendship circle – who believe she rushed back too soon. They think it would have been wiser to sequester herself until this horrific situation was resolved.”
He added, “NBC practically begged her to take a break. Nobody expected her back – everyone assumed she would step away.”
Following her return to the show, her co-workers reportedly became protective of her. “The goal was to let Savannah do her job without forcing her to relive the worst experience of her life in front of millions of people,” a source explained.
The broadcaster has been quite expressive and honest about her feelings while dealing with the ordeal. She not only posted videos on her social media to request information from the kidnappers about her mother’s whereabouts; she has repeatedly discussed the case on-air. This came even after one of the ransom notes claimed that the octogenarian was dead.
An insider acknowledged that on the one hand, “nobody could blame her for wanting to take her mind off this ordeal by throwing herself into work.” However, the source also pointed out that the 54-year-old’s need to consider her safety.
The source said, “Although she’s taking every precaution and there’s extra security to protect her, they could even – God forbid – go for her next.”
“Until these monsters are tracked down and brought to justice, she’ll always be worried they could strike again. Everyone just wants this nightmare to be over, so Savannah can finally start to heal,” the insider concluded.
