Melania Trump has been one of the most absent First Ladies during Donald Trump’s second term. During Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign trail, she had a very limited presence, and since Trump took office, she has been publicly seen only a few times compared to other first ladies, or even her own self during Trump’s first term.
With little to no public presence, questions about Trump’s marriage and Melania Trump’s whereabouts have flooded the internet. Amidst this, political author Michael Wolff and journalist Joanna Coles have revealed what is going on inside White House. According to the Irish Star, Wolff and Coles discussed the “mystery” of Melania Trump on The Daily Beast’s Inside Trump’s Head podcast and labelled her absence as her “vanishing act.”
Speaking on the podcast, Coles said: “We really have seen almost nothing of the First Lady this year, which is why it was a surprise to see her. We’ve seen her, I think, three times this month at UFC and at the fireworks. And she was there with Barron at the World Cup final on Sunday. And actually, I looked it up. She’s done approximately 14 to 16 public appearances this year.”
In contrast, Michelle Obama did between 100 and 150 public appearances in a year, Lara Bush did around 120, and Jill Biden averaged more than 100 trips. Based on such numbers, Coles questioned, “What is she doing the rest of the time? I do have questions about her because it’s very odd that she’s missing, and she is particularly elegant. So I always like to know what she’s wearing when she shows up. What is she doing? What does she do with all her time?”
Assessing what is happening behind closed doors, Wolff called the Trump marriage the “strangest marriage in the history of all presidential marriages,” adding, “They don’t know what she’s going to do and they are afraid of it.” Wolff went on to say that the White House is “afraid” of Melania as they don’t know what she’s going to do.
He said, “Even more disturbing to the White House is that this business of hers seems to make her the center of attention, which puts her kind of in direct conflict with the President of the United States, who, as we know, can’t stand anyone else being the center of attention. Doesn’t mind you making money, but do not steal the limelight.”
This comes as Melania has increasingly focused on her own commercial projects. She earned more than $17.2 million through her 2026 documentary Melania, as well as book sales and non-fungible tokens (NFTs). Her business portfolio also includes jewelry and skincare ventures. At the same time, Muse Films, the production company behind her documentary, was launched last year before the project was released through Amazon MGM Studios.
Marc Beckman, Melania Trump’s senior adviser and co-producer of her documentary, also praised her work ethic while discussing their professional partnership. Speaking to Israel’s Channel 14, he said, “She came to me in Manhattan with an idea to work together strategically to build up her commercial lifestyle vertical.” He added, “Melania is one of the most compelling, hard-working individuals in my life,” explaining that he works with the first lady on her “branding platform and her commercial endeavors.”
Within the White House, her duties include traditional First Lady responsibilities like hosting state dinners, organizing the White House Easter Egg Roll and other ceremonial events, and welcoming foreign leaders.
